Book 4, Chapter 10 Summary

During six weeks of intensive nursing care for her son, Susan hardly notices that Pricey has left the Ward's house. When Ollie's fever seems to have abated, Oliver returns from town with a sleeping medication from the town's doctor, whom Susan scorns. Oliver convinces her to drink the medicine and she sleeps for several hours. Upon awakening, she asks about Pricey and learns that Oliver has sent him back to his family in England. Disgusted with the mine operators and their poor living conditions, they decide to get out of Leadville. Oliver says he has an opportunity for a two-month contract to inspect a mine in Mexico, and they leap at the chance.
