Book 4, Chapter 9 Summary
Susan Ward nurses Pricey after his beating that leaves him with a slashed mouth, broken nose, crushed cheekbone and cracked skull. Although his body heals, his mind and spirit are shattered, and she cares for him and her son as if both are children. Pricey and Ollie play in the fields, gathering wildflowers. Oliver comes home early one afternoon to be with his family; Frank joins them later for socializing. Then Ollie suffers a relapse of malarial fever but his parents don't want to take him to see the town's drunken doctor.
