Book 4, Chapter 7 Summary

Susan Ward returns to her family home, Milton, in New York State to retrieve her son, Ollie, for the return trip west. While there, she feels connected to the earth and her own roots in a way she has never felt at any of the homes a continent away that she has shared with Oliver. In her family home, she also feels a peaceful distance from both her husband and friend Augusta, whom she has not seen for four years. Preparing to leave, she finds an elk head Oliver had sent her from Wyoming and convinces her son they should leave it there. She realizes that transplanted people and plants don't always survive.
