Book 3, Chapter 7 Summary

Once again, Lyman Ward takes the narrative back to the present with a description of spring in Grass Valley, a litany of his daily routines of living and a recognition of the comfort he derives from living in his grandparents' home. The only intrusion into his comfortable routine is his typist Shelly, with the ongoing melodrama of her domestic life. Her estranged husband has come to live in Grass Valley and, although he is often seen around town, h no one feels threatened by him. In a bizzare practical joke, the boyfriend steals Shelly's credit card and orders 24 canaries to be delivered to Lyman Ward's house. Shelly tells the truck driver to take the birds back.
