Book 3, Chapter 2 Summary

Oliver Ward rejoins his wife Susan and infant son Ollie in Santa Cruz, which provided material for Susan's article and illustrations on the beachfront community for Century magazine. Oliver tells Susan of a job opportunity with a mining company in Bolivia. Shocked and troubled at the thought, Susan compares her choices to those of Augusta and John, and decides that perhaps her friend was right to entertain doubts about her husband. Susan tells Oliver that things are fine when the family is together, especially in a place as pleasant as Santa Cruz, but also expresses her boredom and loneliness when he isn't around.
