Book 2, Chapter 6 Summary

Susan Ward goes underground to visit the mines where her husband works in near-darkness sometimes up to 20 hours per day. She is accompanied by Kendall, the mine manager, who she tries to like but fins she cannot because, in her estimation, he is not a gentleman. Susan is terrified by the descent into the mine with its light and dark, sudden sounds of clanking and ringing bells, but tries to remember the scenes and faces she encounters to draw them later after she emerges. Susan fears that an offhand remark she makes under duress to Kendall about mine workers being prisoners could possibly threaten her husband's job.
