Book 2, Chapter 4 Summary

News that Augusta has had another child and is releasing her despair over the death of the first child cheers Susan. A steady stream of visitors to the Ward's home provides them with amusement, if not the polish and sophistication of easterners. Susan works hard on her magazine illustrations; her earnings help to support the family. Further good news comes in the form of an offer from Scribner's to be its western correspondent.
