Book 2, Chapter 1 Summary
Susan Ward's idealization of her new husband and the west are both shattered when she arrives in California and realizes that her life will involve nothing but hardship. The swirling dust of the Santa Clara Valley fills her eyes and nostrils on the ride to their new home, but she is not interested in, or able to see the view. She is appalled that Oliver has forgotten to pay for her train passage as well as that of the servant girl, Lizzie, but pleasantly surprised by the neat and tidy condition of their cottage that bears her husband's masculine sense of order. Susan is once again thrown off balance, however, by her husband's revelation that his company will not reimburse him for the money he spent renovating their home, and they are thus already in debt. After a surprise visit by the mine manager and his wife, Susan feels it...
