Book 1, Chapter 7 Summary

The story shifts from Oliver and Susan Ward to the present life of Lyman Ward, as he goes into Nevada City for a doctor's visit. There, he encounters an old high school chum named Al Sutton, now a pot-bellied, myopic man who still has a wart growing on the tip of his tongue that causes him to speak with a lisp. Al operates a laundromat in Nevada City, services the machines when they're broken, and keeps up on local comings and goings. He shares a laugh or two with Lyman about their respective disabilities - Lyman's amputated leg resulting from bone disease and Al's quadrifocal glasses.
