After a Quaker marriage in the home of Oliver's parents in Guilford, Connecticut, the newly married couple has their honeymoon there as well. Two weeks after their marriage, Oliver returns to California to find a place for them to live. In letters to Augusta, Susan Ward both praises her new husband and apologizes for him. Susan believes, and wants Augusta and Thomas to believe, that she and Oliver will spend just a couple of years in California then return to New York and spend their lives alongside each other, raising children in happy unanimity.
