Book 1, Chapter 5 Summary
On a visit to New York, Oliver Ward impresses Susan and her family favorably, but evokes a strongly negative reaction from Augusta, who warns Susan that if she marries Oliver she will be throwing her life and talent away. Augusta's vehemence is driven partly by the fact she has given up painting and feels that Susan's work must somehow satisfy both women's artistic yearnings. Susan stands firm and tells Augusta that the decision about who to marry is hers alone. Susan and Augusta reach an unspoken agreement not to discuss Oliver Ward while Susan waits patiently for Oliver to get his affairs in order in California before marrying her in 1876, eight years after their first meeting.
