Book 1, Chapter 4 Summary

Susan Burling, a rising artist in the New York cultural world, meets Thomas Hudson, editor of Scribner's magazine, with whom she develops a fast friendship as important to her as her friendship with Augusta. Through Hudson, Susan meets the poet John Greenleaf Whittier when she is under consideration to produce illustrations for his poem, "Snowbound." Although she does not get the Whittier job, she does produce drawings to accompany a work by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Despite her heady artistic world, Susan slowly becomes close to Oliver Ward because of his steady cheerfulness. In reading letters and reminiscences of his grandmother, Lyman Ward is struck by how complicated her life had become.
