Book 1, Chapter 2 Summary

Lyman Ward discovers evidence of his grandmother's latent lesbianism in her reminiscences that refer to her deep and abiding love for Augusta. He also learns why his grandmother insisted that he name his son Rodman. The name is taken from Joseph Rodman Drake, an ancestor of Augusta Drake. At this point, Lyman begins his admittedly fictionalized account of his grandparents' lives, in an attempt to "connect the dots" between the known historical facts. He imagines the family friends and acquaintances of the Drake family, and conjures a high society party at which the narrator describes these notables, complete with foreshadowing of their fates. It is at this party that a shy Oliver Ward meets Susan Burling and a romance is kindled.
