Summary

The narrative shifts focus to Mrs. Houston. She helped make arrangements for Miranda and Baby Ellen to be reunited with their father. Mrs. Houston, Stevie, and Jeanine go to the Phoenix airport with Miranda and Baby Ellen. Jeanine has agreed to accompany the children on the plane and hand them over to their father at the airport in California. The women see a newspaper, the cover story of which declares that Bill is being transferred to the “Death House” (170) to await execution. They are devastated to learn of this. The narrative then transitions to Bill, who has been transferred to the “Death House” (172). He views the gas chamber that will be used to execute him, and the guards say that he is allowed to look inside it.
