Summary

The narration shifts attention to Burris Houston. He lives with Jeanine, although he is technically still married to another woman, about whom he still has confused feelings. Burris is a heroin addict, and Jeanine uses the $20 from Mrs. Houston to buy Burris a small amount of heroin. Jeanine follows an esoteric, occult system of beliefs contained in a book called the Urantia Book. Jeanine advises Burris to quit heroin, but she also says that she feels good when watching Burris under the influence of the drug. Bill and Jamie soon arrive in town and stay with Mrs. Houston. Bill, Jamie, Burris, Jeanine, James, Stevie, and Mrs. Houston all have dinner at Mrs. Houston’s house one night.
