Frank passes the time between his sixteenth birthday and his nineteenth birthday, working at Eason's and for Mrs. Finucane. When Frank is one month away from his nineteenth birthday, he only needs a few more pounds for the fare to America. One Friday evening Mrs. Finucane sends Frank to the pub for sherry; but he finds her dead upon his return. He takes seventeen pounds from her purse, another forty from a trunk upstairs, a ledger and the bottle of sherry. He now had enough money to go to America. Reading the ledger, Frank sees Agnes Keating's name and notes that none of Mrs. Finucane's customers will ever have to repay their debts to her.
