Chapter 17 Summary

As Frank wishes that he could have remained in Mrs. O'Connell's good graces, he meets his uncle, Pa Keating, for his first legal pint, now that he is sixteen. Frank offers to buy Pa a pint, but Pa says that he will accept a pint from Frank when he returns home from America, as a success. The men in the pub discuss the war criminal, Herman Goering, the trials at Nuremberg and concentration camps. After Frank has a second pint, Pa sends him home because he is drunk. Frank instead goes to a Jesuit church to confess his sins with Theresa, but a brother kicks him and he falls down the steps.

When Frank reaches home, Angela tells him that Pa should have known better than to buy him a pint. Frank tells her.....
