Chapter 8 Summary

Frank is ten years old and is preparing for Confirmation with his teacher, Mr. O'Dea. He learns that after receiving the rite of Confirmation, he will be a soldier of the Catholic Church, which will entitle him to die for the faith. Mikey Molloy disbelieves what the boys are told, but there will be another Collection to look forward to.

Frank's friend, Peter Dooley is nicknamed Quasimodo, because of a hump on his back. Peter is fifteen years old, has nine sisters, an impaired eye and a twisted leg; but he is blessed with a beautiful voice. Peter wants to go to London and get a job with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). This will take money. So he tells Frank and Billy that he will let them crawl up his drainpipe at home.....
