Chapter 7 Summary

As the chapter opens, Frank recounts Malachy's pattern of obtaining the dole money and returning home drunk, late at night. He sings loudly and gets his children out of bed to make them promise that they would die for Ireland. Frank says that Malachy does this monthly and notes how this angers Angela.

Frank says that he has a friend named, Mickey Spellacy, whose family members are dying of consumption. Frank envies Mickey because he gets a week off from school and goes to wakes, with lots of food, every time someone dies. Mickey is worried that his sister, Brenda, will die during the summer, cheating him out of a week off from school. Mickey asks Frank and Billy Campbell to pray that Brenda will survive until September. If they do, Mickey promises them.....
