Chapter 4 Summary

Frank is preparing for First Confession and First Communion at school. He has a new friend in eleven-year-old Mikey Molloy. Mikey is a neighbor who has seizures, crossed eyes and a love for books. Mikey's mother is Nora Molloy. When things become too much for Nora, she is taken to the local lunatic asylum, where she feels safe. Mikey's father, Peter, wins money through drinking contests and calls Mikey, "Cyclops" because of his crossed eyes. Peter does not always bring home the money he wins at drinking contests.

Frank is required to learn a number of prayers and other tenets of Catholicism from his teacher, Mr. Benson. Mr. Benson rules the classroom through fear and beatings. He has the boys practice swallowing the Communion host by eating bits of the newspaper, The Limerick Leader......
