Summary

In Chapter 22, Zoe and Porter attend a Broadway musical together at the Kennedy Center. She is wearing her engagement ring even though she usually does not. She has not gotten up the courage to give it back to Porter yet. Although she should have told him no when he first proposed, she had been too stunned to speak and he had assumed her answer was yes. It is during the intermission that Zoe returns Porter’s ring. She does not even attend the remainder of the production.

Zoe leaves Porter a goodbye note telling him that she thinks it is best if she resigns.
