Summary

In the Prologue, a high school girl named Daphne attends a camp for music prodigies in Vermont one summer where she meets fellow musician, Malachy Burns. They talk about their futures in music, swim and just spend time sunning near a lake.

In Chapter 1, Kit Noonan's wife, Sandra, issues housekeeping orders to him as she prepares to leave for the day to tend to her landscaping business. The forty-something couple lives in New Jersey with their ten-year-old twins, Fanny and Will, whose care falls mostly to Kit since he is still unemployed, having not achieved tenure as an art history professor. Sandra's exasperation with Kit's ennui leads her to tell him that he has to leave the house and go find out anything he can about the biological father he never knew. She hopes that just by doing something...
