Pages 57-61 Summary

As he is leaving the Gray home, Mrs. Gray asks Alexander about his relationship with God. She also suggests that he go to confession. She says she will go to confession as well. They both should confess their sins but not mention who was their fellow sinner.

Alexander confesses to Father Priest. Father Priest asks if Alexander's indiscretion was with a boy or a girl. This causes Alexander to pause and think about the question. Alexander admits it was with a married woman and Father Priest admonishes him for his act because it is a grave sin.

As Alexander kneels at the altar for his penance, he feels as if a devil is sitting on his shoulder. The little devil is whispering things into his ear about what he and Mrs. Gray did and how Mrs. Gray looks and feels when...
