Pages 30-56 Summary

Alexander describes his first encounter with Mrs. Gray. It was a school holiday. He went to the Gray house because he and Billy had plans. Billy wasn't ready yet, so while Billy was getting ready, Alexander walks by a cracked door and ends up seeing Mrs. Gray naked in the reflection of a mirror.

As Alexander walks toward the stairs, he hears footsteps behind him, which turns out to be Kitty. Alexander leaves the Gray house. He says that Billy never mentions his disappearance that day. It's another week before Alexander sees Mrs. Gray again. She is playing tennis and he is too on the courts where the Grays have a membership. While Alexander is walking home, Mrs. Gray pulls up in her car behind him and offers him a ride. The route she takes is not the way home, however...
