Momaday's story cycle "The Strange and True Story of My Life with Billy the Kid" has been published in a number of places both before and after the publication of The Ancient Child. One of the more interesting publications was in American West Magazine which also featured paintings by Momaday, called The Billy the Kid Suite, a series of inkand-watercolor portraits of the characters Momaday featured in his depiction of Billy's short and violent life.
Momaday also weaves in pieces from his other works, including a passage from The Names which tells the story of the besting of a stunt rider by a woman rider and scenes from The Way to Rainy Mountain, including a visit to an old cemetary and the marvelous appearance of tarantulas during a rainstorm.
