Book 1, Chapter 21, She Turns to the Painting Again Summary
Set remembers when Lola Bourne buys one of his paintings entitled "Night Window Man." When he painted it, he had not planned on the way it turned out. The painting depicts a little man in red as seen through a window. At one of his showings he is attracted to Lola, and she tells him that she likes the painting and wants to buy it. Set asks her why she likes the painting, and she answers that the little man in red seems like he is about to be transformed.

The painting of the little man in red represents Set as he begins a transformation. Although not clear at this time, the transformation will be a metamorphosis from the artist to the spiritual bear, after which Set will no longer resemble his former self, similar to how a butterfly does not resemble the caterpillar.
