Book 3, Chapter 19 Summary

The trial begins on October 15th with jury selection and a crowd that is decidedly hostile toward Clyde. Jephson boosts Clyde's courage by telling him that he is NOT guilty, that he didn't intentionally strike Roberta, and that the lies they're telling are the only way to get justice.

Book 3, Chapter 19 Analysis

Clyde isn't strong on his own and follows the lead of Jephson. He is the shrewder of the two partners and has advised Clyde to smile, be cordial and never show his nervousness.
