Book 3, Chapter 17 Summary
Belknap and Jephson appeal the necessity of a special term of the Supreme Court since they need time to prepare, and they emphasize that Mason has called for the Court just to increase publicity and his political ambitions hoping that a quick trial would increase his popularity before elections. The Judge, however, rules in favor of Mason, and the request for a change of venue is also denied since Mason says that moving the case will be a greater expense to the county. Belknap & Jephson suggest that someone come forward in favor of Clyde to create sympathy. The Lycurgus Griffiths refuse, saying that if they are forced to testify, they will no longer pay for Clyde's lawyers.
