Book 3, Chapter 9 Summary

Mason goes to camp to arrest Clyde, and finds the wealthy crowd, along with Sondra Finchley, who is beautiful and rich; deducing from the letters that this is the woman Clyde was attracted to. Mason then figures that Clyde used and then killed Roberta when this better opportunity presented itself. When Deputy Kraut brings Clyde in, Mason questions him. Clyde is afraid of ruining any chance he has with Sondra by admitting knowledge of Roberta. He repeatedly denies he knows her, even in the face of the unquestionable evidence Mason has in the form of letters, witnesses, circumstances and motive.
