Book 3, Chapter 1 Summary
Book 3 opens at the Cataraqui County Coroner's office. Fred Heit, a middle aged man, is alerted to a double drowning at Bittern Lake. Heit and his assistant, Earl Newcomb, take the facts and go to the lake to investigate the scene. The court stenographer, Zillah Saunders, spreads the news to the District Attorney, Orville Mason.
