Book 2, Chapter 30 Summary
Clyde does not see Roberta when she returns Christmas Day, because he has been invited to the Griffiths. Gilbert is infuriated by newspaper's write-up of Clyde's attendance at the party, but Samuel feels that Clyde must be of a good cut to be recognized by other members of the social set. Samuel decides to invite Clyde for Christmas dinner since it would look bad if the family didn't acknowledge him when everybody else did. Gilbert knows that this is of Sondra's doing

Gilbert is angry at Clyde's inclusion in societal events, but he must bow to his father's command that Clyde be invited to Christmas dinner.
