Book 2, Chapter 17 Summary

Roberta tells Grace and the Newtons that Mrs. Braley, a worker in the stitching department at the plant, is going to teach her some stitches so that she might be able to work in another department. This excuse gives Roberta the ability to skip church and meet Clyde at the end of her street while her relatives are away at church services. Roberta worries about the stylishness of her clothes, but Clyde finds her far more attractive than Hortense or Rita. Clyde makes advances on her, including putting his arms around her and kissing her passionately. Roberta, too, desires physical contact, but worries about other people and what they think of her. She understands that "good girls" would not behave in this manner. Clyde, reminding her of how short their time.....
