Book 2, Chapter 8 Summary
Walter has to return home on Sunday, but he promises to take Clyde to a church social on Wednesday night to meet his family and some girls. Clyde debates the wisdom of this, knowing what his attraction to girls did to him in Kansas City. He goes anyway, finding himself the object of attention simply because of his connection to Samuel Griffiths. The people are all impressed that he's in their midst. Dillard introduces him to Zella Shuman and Rita Dickerman, very attractive girls, obviously freer and less repressed than the other girls at the church. Clyde is worried about their attitudes, but goes with Walter and the girls to Zella's house for dancing - an activity severely chastised by the respectable religious community
Once there, Clyde finds that Walter is a superb dancer and that Walter and Zella are a definite couple. Rita is meant as a match for...
