Book 2, Chapter 5 Summary

Clyde presents himself at the factory, where because of his name, some employees

treat him with deference, even though his cousin Gilbert treats him coldly and condescendingly. Clyde is anxious to placate Gilbert and does his best to be polite and charming. Gilbert arranges to have one of his workers help establish Clyde in a boarding house, partly because he doesn't want Clyde to embarrass the family by staying at a place not worthy of the Griffiths name, but also because he wants to exercise some control over Clyde. His wish is to keep him out of everyone's view and diminish any threat he might pose to Gilbert's own standing.

Clyde's first and most menial work at the factory takes place in the shrinking room. He's placed under the supervision of Mr. Whiggam......
