Book 2, Chapter 4 Summary
Clyde, who is saddened by the fact that he is still only a bellboy at the age of 21, finally identifies himself to his uncle. After seeing Clyde's manners and appearance, Samuel says that he will consider Clyde for a position in his company if any should open. Several weeks later, Clyde gets a letter from his uncle Samuel, telling him to give ten days notice of when he'll arrive and report to Gilbert at the factory. Gilbert and Samuel have decided to start Clyde at the very bottom of the business and give him the smallest salary, mostly to keep the boundaries of his class in place. After all, Clyde was not entitled to money or social status because he is related to them. He must work like any other laborer.
Samuel decides to grant Clyde a position, in part, because he feels that Asa was not treated fairly...
