Other males, namely Higby and Sparser, pay attention to Hortense. When they play on the frozen lake below the inn, holding hands and playing crack the whip, Hortense always ends up with Sparser, holding his hand, falling down and letting him help her up. Clyde is furious, recognizing her true nature. When he confronts her, she says he has no right to control him.
