Book 1, Chapter 16 Summary

Hortense tries to work out a payment plan for the coat, but Mr. Rubenstein won't do it. Instead, he does offer to take a down payment of $25 dollars and then take the balance due within the next two weeks. Hortense tells Clyde, however, that the coat costs $125.00 because she wants a hat to go with it. While she'll accept the payment arrangement, it's not what she wanted, because she wanted that coat immediately.

In the meantime, Clyde's mother comes to him asking for another $50.00 dollars. She admits that Esta is back in town and in trouble, and Clyde admits that he already knows. He is torn with the dilemma of whether to help his mother and his sister, knowing that it is the right thing to help his family,.....
