Summary

The action is continuous.

Sheila comments that Goole did not show Gerald the photograph, and Goole says he thought it better not to. He then shows it to Mrs. Birling, who says she does not recognize Eva / Daisy. Goole accuses her of lying. Both she and Birling respond angrily, but Goole says that “public men” like Birling “have their responsibilities as well as their privileges” (40). Birling says that Goole did not come to talk about his responsibilities, but Sheila says she is starting to wonder. She goes on to tell Mrs. Birling that she could see that Mrs. Birling recognized the picture, and urges her to not make the situation any worse. The front door slams, and Birling goes out to see whether it was Gerald coming back in, or Eric going out.
