Summary

Lizzie ran out of the kitchen because she did not understand why Mutti was not being sympathetic and she already knew she would love Peter for the rest of her life. She ran to the barn and Marlene comforted her. The next morning Peter showed Lizzie a map and said they would be travelling in the same direction – the family away from the Russians and Peter towards an Allied army base. Mutti, however, overheard and said the family would stay in the house. The narrator yelled at her in response and ran back to the barn.

Suddenly, she heard Karli’s screaming from the lake, and her, Mutti, and Peter ran to him – he had fallen in through a hole in the ice. Peter yelled at Lizzie to grab a rope. Lizzie threw the rope and Peter...
