Summary

Lizzie paused from her story to mention that she had left her photo album, with pictures of her family and Marlene, in her apartment, and the narrator and Karl offered to get it for her later. She then showed the two a compass from the drawer next to her bed, and said she had found it on that day.

Returning to her story, Lizzie said that Mutti seemed about to stab the RAF soldier with a pitchfork. The soldier spoke German and apologized to Mutti for the damage his troops had caused. His name was Peter. He said he was a navigator and had not realized how much harm they would cause. The plane had been hit by flak and everyone had died but him: he had jumped out using a parachute at the urging of one...
