Summary

Elizabeth and Mutti knew they had to get the shelter, but Karli refused and continued to chase after Marlene. Mutti and Elizabeth raced after him, and just as they caught up the sound of bomber planes filled the air, and bombs began to fall. The entire family ran towards the countryside, knowing they had a better chance of survival there than in the shelter in the burning city. They ran past flaming buildings and carnage, stopping as little as possible, and also heard the shrieks of dying animals in the zoo. As they knelt on the ground crying, Marlene suddenly wrapped her trunk around them. Mutti resolved that the family and Marlene must go to Uncle Manfred and Aunt Lotti’s home despite their old argument. The family continued walking, and all around them they heard screams...
