Summary

In Chapter 48, set on Wednesday, Jess serves as narrator again. Jess notes that Shields’ last gift seems more dangerous than any of the others. She is afraid for her family and remembers the words of Tiffani’s boyfriend: “Nothing’s ever free in life” (239).

When Jess arrives home, she is paranoid and checks the entire apartment. She searches for information about April by first reading her obituary. Jess next discovers that April’s Instagram is still active and is open to the public. Jess notices in a picture of April taken just six days before she died that April looks genuinely happy. She also sees a cashmere wrap like the one that Shields gave Jess in the picture. Jess continues looking through April’s photos until she finds one taken in June. It is of a sleeping man.
