Chapters 30 through 36 Summary

In Chapter Thirty, Nina says the Population Police have been forcing everyone to turn in their identification cards and they are all stored in the warehouse where the food is stored. The ramifications are huge for third children. It means no third child will ever be able to come out of hiding.

In Chapter Thirty-one, Matthias says he believes the commander suspects his involvement with the rebels and that must be the reason the commander bugged Matthias's room. Nina disagrees, saying many of the rooms in the headquarters are bugged.

In Chapter Thirty-two, Matthias struggles to regain control of his depression. He spends some time expecting to be arrested or to learn others are being arrested until he forces himself to get a grip. Matthias forces himself to return to listening to the commander and catches the end of a conversation...
