Summary

Chapter 6 begins with Mustafa and Amina’s father watching a football match while Amina studies. Amina began to fantasize about performing a solo in Ms. Holly’s production, but she remembered that her “voice would betray” (54) her. Meanwhile, Amina’s mother announces that each family member will have a list of responsibilities to prepare for Thaya Jaan’s arrival. Amina describes her chores while her mother cooks. Amina locks herself in her bedroom so she can avoid the strong smells of her mother’s cooking, and reminisces about a time when everyone at school remarked on the smell emanating from Amina’s hair and clothes.

After some time passes, Amina’s parents start arguing. Amina’s mother starts to cook too much food because she wants Thaya Jaan to be happy. However, Amina’s father tells his wife that he is not worried...
