Summary

A turbulent storm floods Camp Patience, leaving most tents in disarray. Sarat collects water-swept items with the help of “her girls” (146), a group she recruited at Gaines’s request. Meanwhile, Martina is perplexed by the fact that her tent survived the storm. She discovers from Dana that Simon covered it in a protective spray, even though he has not lived there in months. They receive a care package that he sent, but Martina dismisses it. Dana and Sarat talk about their plan of moving to Atlanta to work for the Free Southern State, but Sarat is unsure about leaving their mother behind. Dana tells her that the only reason that other people do not steal their things is because of their connections: Simon is with the rebels, and Sarat has become “Albert Gaines’s pet” (151).
