Summary

Chapter Twenty-One begins with an aggressive train raid. It is impossible to tell whether or not the officers are corrupt so all migrants scatter. Luca wets his pants as memories of the massacre flood his brain. Lydia trips and falls; Rebeca and Soledad run farther away. They are rounded up like cattle by heavily armed men and stripped of their personal belongings. The agents fondle both of the girls under the guise of a body search. When they search Lydia, Rebeca distracts Luca by asking geography questions. The girls are separated from Lydia and Luca, despite Lydia’s claim that they are her daughters.

In Chapter Twenty-Two, Lydia and Luca are taken to a large warehouse and this confirms that the officers are corrupt. Shortly thereafter, Soledad and Rebeca arrive and it is apparent they have been physically and sexually assaulted. Rebeca is...
