Part III, Chapter 2: Joe is traveling to the German consulate to try to get his family out of Europe. He is well-dressed, and this is one of his many visits to the consulate. He cannot even get them visas. He decides to go to Hoboken, New Jersey, where the ship Rotterdam is docking from Europe. Joe goes to the docks and thinks he sees his father, which is impossible and not the case. When Joe returns to Manhattan and goes to the German consulate, he finds out that his father, Dr. Emil Kavalier, has died. The consulate official is traveling back to Europe, too. Joe goes into a bar and decides to take a train to Montreal, Canada and enlist in the RAF, the Royal Air.....
