Summary

Chapter 31 begins with Nasreen Baji’s friend Zeba cancelling their shopping trip to Lahore. Desperate for new clothes, Nasreen asks Amal to accompany her instead. As Amal packs snacks for their journey, Bilal advises Amal to rest her arms at every opportunity by laying down Nasreen’s many shopping bags. During their car ride to the big city, Amal and Nasreen pass Shaukat’s shop. Nasreen mistakes Shaukat for his father, and Amal wonders whether her own memories of home will one day grow as distant as Nasreen’s. Upon arriving in Lahore, Amal and Nasreen encounter a group of protestors who slow down traffic. When their car finally reaches the bazaar, Amal admires the city with its vibrant smells, shops, and people.
