Chapter 12 Summary
The final chapter opens with Baumer at home, on leave from a slight poisonous gas inhalation. He grasps onto rumors of a ceasefire. He shares that he has lost all hope and joy in the future. He returns to the front without fear, because he has nothing to lose.
The closing chapters tell of Baumer's death. He dies with a peaceful face on a day when the papers report, "All quiet on the western front."
Chapter 12 Analysis
Even the shortness of the final chapter is symbolic. Baumer's life was short. His chance at happiness was even shorter. Once he dies, he can finally be at peace, because he had no hope for peace anymore in life. The images of war that would be forever stuck in his mind ruined him for hope of the good of humanity.
