Chapter 9 Summary

Baumer travels to join with his company once again, but cannot find them at first. He desperately inquires as to his comrades, but no one has the information. It takes days for him to locate the troops, and he almost weeps with relief when he sees his fellow soldiers have avoided harm, for now.

The troops are encouraged to polish up, and new uniform parts are handed out, without explanation. The troops drill for days, which seems banal and elementary, considering their experience.
